West Nile unseen here so far.

Skokie Health Director Catherine Counard said the unusually rainy summer so far could help keep infected mosquitoes down this year. There have been no reported human cases of West Nile Virus in the state although such cases usually occur later in the season.

The village has six mosquito traps throughout Skokie that are checked twice a week, a high number compared to many other municipalities. Two dead birds sent in this year have not tested positive for the virus although Counard said that it's too early to tell for sure how the village will be impacted.

West Nile found in Cook County

Illinois public health officials say two samples from mosquitoes in Cook County are the first in the state to test positive for West Nile virus this year. Humans contract West Nile through mosquito bites. The virus caused 44 U.S. deaths in 2008, including one in Illinois. Illinois has set aside nearly $3 million this year for West Nile prevention. Officials are asking residents to drain any standing water so mosquitoes don't have places to breed.

Everyone should be prepared for an emergency. Sometimes emergencies are so immense that responders cannot immediately assist you or your family.

American Red Cross

Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services--water, gas, electricity or telephones--were cut off? Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone right away. Therefore, the best way to make your family and your home safer is to be prepared before disaster strikes. Website provides links and information for different kinds of emergencies from frozen pipes to terrorist attacks.

1600 Clifton Road Atlanta, GA 30333 800.311.3435 The possibility of public health emergencies arising in the United States concerns many people in the wake of recent hurricanes, tsunamis, acts of terrorism, and the threat of pandemic influenza. Though some people feel it is impossible to be prepared for unexpected events, the truth is that taking preparedness actions helps people deal with disasters of all sorts much more effectively when they do occur.
