SkokieNet visits the Taste of Skokie Valley held at the Doubletree Hotel earlier this year. After interviewing people and sampling an array of Skokie's restaurants' best creations, Skokie Library staff created this slide show detailing the fun, the faces, and the foods.

Village to Honor 'Merchants of the Year' At June 7th Board Meeting

The Skokie Consumer Affairs Commission will honor the winners of the 2010 Merchant of the Year awards at the June 7, 2010 Village Board Meeting.  There were over 500 ballots nominating 15 different Skokie Businesses.

 

And the WINNERS are:

1st Place:   Randy Ramos Salon at 8350 Keystone

2nd Place:  Main-Crawford Auto Repair, 8359 Crawford

3rd Place:   Sweety Pies Bakery, 8042 Lincoln Avenue

Next year's budget for the McCracken Middle School Library Media Center has been eliminated. Staff cannot purchase books for the students unless they raise the money themselves.

Interested in Yoga?  This ancient fitness program is the practice of stretcging to limber the body and build self awareness, while increasing energy and tranquility, as well as toning muscles. People of all ages and fitness levels are invited to attend the free classes on Saturdays from April 10 through July 3 the classes are offered from 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 at Lucy's.  During the good weather it will be classes offered outside of L.L.Bean/Crate and Barrel Plaza, inclement weather, the classes will take place inside Lucy.  Taught by certified teachers.

Is It a Turtle? No, It's an Archaic Scraper...

Gene Baldwin, the Artifact Hunter, stopped by and shared this Archaic scraper with staff at SkokieNet and the Skokie Library. He tells us that it was probably used in scraping hide hair from deerskin.

 

The Archaic Indians (8000-1000 BC) were animists; many of their tools represent animals. Gene has scrapers and knives in the shapes of river otters, bears, deer, birds, snakes, etc. Our scraper is a rendering of a soft-shell turtle.
