Sixth Annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition, Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White and the Illinois Center for the Book are pleased to announce the sixth annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition, Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award. Named for the late awardwinning poet and Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks, the contest promotes creative writing, encourages local writers, and provides a unique opportunity for recognizing new literary talent in the state.

 

The competition is open to Illinois residents age 18 and over.

ILLINOIS EMERGING WRITERS COMPETITION

The 6th Illinois Emerging Writers Competition has been announced by Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White. The competition is designed to promote creative writing, encourage new writers and provide a unique opportunity and outlet for recognizing new poets and short story writers. Winners receive cash prizes and have their works submitted for review and possible publication in several Illinois literary magazines.

Raising Teens: A Risky Business

Parents and guardians in Niles Township are invited to a Town Hall Meeting to discuss “Raising Teens:  A Risky Business” from 7 to 8:30 pm on Tuesday, April 6 in the Niles West High School Auditorium at 5701 Oakton, Skokie.

Annual Teen Job Fair around the corner!

 

Each year Skokie Public Library holds a job fair for teens in the Mary Radmacher Meeting Room. The event is co-sponsored by the Skokie Park District. Teens participating in the Job Fair have an opportunity to get job hunting tips, meet with potential employers, pick up job applications, practice interviewing, and learn about volunteer jobs.

ABLE! Offers Two-Week Work Readiness Class For Veterans Starting March 8

National Able Network, 180 N. Wabash in Chicago, starts a two-week work readiness training class March 8th for veterans who seek to sharpen their job readiness skills.

Niles West High School Readies For June 11 "Relay For Life of SLMGN"

Niles West High School is gearing up for the June 11th "Relay For Life Of Skokie, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove & Niles." Relay for Life is the country's largest fundraiser and is dedicated to eradicating cancer.  Teams will take turns walking or running around the track.

 

The American Cancer Society program is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

On May 15th, Niles West Parents Association throws its 30th Annual Pasta & Pops Dinner And Concert, its largest fundraiser of the year. The event begins at 6:30pm and runs through 10pm.

 

Featured performances this year include the high school's orchestra, choirs and bands.

Ida Crown Academy OK'd to Build

Plans for the Ida Crown Jewish Academy to build on the old Rand McNally site at 8255 Central Park have been approved by the Skokie Village Board of Trustees. Half of the property will be re-zoned residential, while the other half will remain zoned for industrial use in order to ensure against losing more tax revenue. Construction could start in 18 months, with completion by 2013.

New Science Labs for District 219

New science labs have opened in both Niles West and North High Schools which will greatly enhance the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) Inquiry and Research class. Students enrolled in this class are encouraged to engage in independent study and meet with their teachers everyday while pursuing research using online modules. Niles North science teacher Jacklyn Naughton said "I think this is the most authentic science that students will ever do. (...) They have to design their own experiment."  

Niles North High School Seeking Nominations For Distinguished Alumnus Award

 

 

Niles North High School is seeking nominations for its annual Distinguished Alumnus Award, presented each year to a former student during an awards ceremony. This year's ceremony -- the school's 45th -- will be held Tuesday, May 18th.

 

Nominees must be a graduate of Niles North High School and should have distinguished themselves through their achievement in their field or contributions to society.

RESPONSE Teens Go "Green" At This Year's Snowball Retreat

The theme of this year's RESPONSE's Snowball teen retreat is "going green." Snowball is an annual retreat planned and led by teens that gives you a break from your life and introduces you to new people from all over Chicago and suburbs. With support from Response staff, teens lead a weekend of fun activities like Ultimate Frisbee or Improv. You can also learn new things too! In past years students have explores issues of elf-defense, sexual identity, violence, diversity, and substance abuse prevention. Snowball is held at Camp Henry Horner in Ingleside, IL.

Skokie Public Library wants to keep you reading!

 

To do so, we need your gently used paperback books! Any genre or popular title is welcome. Donated books will be sold in our used book sale, with all proceeds going to support library services, or will become part of our new outreach initiative, a read and pass it on deposit collection available to folks outside the library.

 

Please bring your gently used donations to the West Circulation Desk.
