At Turning Point's annual Forum, the news was mixed. While every agency in attendance spoke of many fewer dollars available for mental health services, they also detailed the ways they are working more effectively together.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Starts New Support Group For Individuals With Mood Disorders & Their Families

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance is starting free support groups for individuals with mood disorders and their families beginning Monday, February 1st, at Evanston Hospital.

Sign Language Classes Begin At Oakton College In January

Oakton Community College, at 1600 E. Golf Road in Des Plaines, will offer sign language classes at two separate class times beginning in January.

 

Basic Sign Language (SPE 125) is available for students interested in conversing with the deaf and hard of hearing. This course is the first step toward national certification and runs for 16 weeks.

 

Classes begin Jan. 19th and will be held Tuesdays from 7-9:50pm.

 

A second course begins Jan. 20th and will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:35am-10:45am.

 

Village of Skokie Lending Closet

The Village of Skokie Human Services Division Lending Closet offers Skokie residents the use of canes, walkers, crutches and wheelchairs for periods up to six months. A driver's license or state ID is required for wheelchair loans.

 

For wheelchairs only, there is a $25.00 refundable deposit for a 24-hour period or for up to a five-day loan period. The Lending Closet also offers a $25.00 non-refundable loan up to a maximum of six months.

Hearing Impaired Niles Residents Invited To Test Amplified Telephones

Do you have difficulty hearing on the telephone?

 

On Tuesday, Nov. 17th, Join Niles Township Government, the Township of Schaumburg and the Villages of Skokie and Morton Grove to test free amplified telephones and to learn more about getting a free one provided.

 

The tryout is being held at the Morton Grove Civic Center, 6140 Dempster Street.

Participants must make reservations by calling 847.470.5223 in advance.

Lions Club Plans Free Hearing Testing For Adults

The Lions of Illinois, together with the Skokie Lions Club, is sponsoring free  hearing tests for adults on Sunday, July 19th, at Devonshire Park,  4400 W. Greenwood, in Skokie. 

 

 Testing will be done from 3 to 6pm. 

  

Smith Activities Center Holds 'Free Amplified Telephones' Information Session

The Smith Activities Center will host a presentation by the Illinois Telecommunications Association from Schaumburg Township Disability Services on the use of amplified telephones.

 

The program will be held July 20th beginning at 11am at 5120 Galitz Street in Skokie and is intended only for those with hearing impairments.

 

Participants will also learn how to apply for a free amplified telephone. To be eligible for a phone, you must:

 

* Be a legal resident of Illinois;

State Senate Votes To Approve Medical Marijuana law; Bill Moves To House Where Rep. Lou Lang Is Sponsor

A bill to legalize medical marijuana moves to the Illinois House after a narrow passage by the Senate Wednesday in a 30-28 vote. House committee passed a similar medical marijuana measure in March.

If the bill becomes law, Illinois would join 13 other states that have similar statutes in place.
