Sixth Annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition, Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White and the Illinois Center for the Book are pleased to announce the sixth annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition, Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award. Named for the late awardwinning poet and Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks, the contest promotes creative writing, encourages local writers, and provides a unique opportunity for recognizing new literary talent in the state.

 

The competition is open to Illinois residents age 18 and over.

ILLINOIS EMERGING WRITERS COMPETITION

The 6th Illinois Emerging Writers Competition has been announced by Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White. The competition is designed to promote creative writing, encourage new writers and provide a unique opportunity and outlet for recognizing new poets and short story writers. Winners receive cash prizes and have their works submitted for review and possible publication in several Illinois literary magazines.

Mr. Rosenberg is a lawyer and educator who has taught at religious schools and synagogues throughout the metropolitan Chicago area.

Skokie Public Library wants to keep you reading!

 

To do so, we need your gently used paperback books! Any genre or popular title is welcome. Donated books will be sold in our used book sale, with all proceeds going to support library services, or will become part of our new outreach initiative, a read and pass it on deposit collection available to folks outside the library.

 

Please bring your gently used donations to the West Circulation Desk.

Dave Levine of Illinois Nut and Candy offers his delicacies to attendees of the Skokie Theatre's production of Love Letters. Theater goers could select candy for a dollar a piece, with all proceeds benefiting Skokie Theatre.

Singer Jack Miuccio Performs At Skokie Theatre Veteran's Benefit

Jack Miuccio's performances capture the vibe of the Rat Pack. He has opened for Frankie Avalon and Fabian, and sings regularly at the Tuscany restaurant in Oakbrook and Enzo's in West Chicago.

 

On January 23rd at 8pm, Jack headlines a tribute to veterans at the Skokie Theatre. Admission is free with a donation to the theatre's "vet ticket" fund.

Donor Tree Plaques Can Be Purchased For Installing At Skokie Sculpture Park

A new sculpture at the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park along McCormick Blvd. "Donor Tree" by local artist Joe Folise was dedicated in the section between Dempster and Main streets. Folise is also the one that was responsible for the original design of the sculpture park.

 

Donor plaques can be purchased in the increments of $125, $250, and $1,000 which will be placed on the branches of the tree to memorialize loved ones and recognize donors to the park. The park has been a familiar fixture in Skokie for 20 years.
