Coalition of Asian American Communities a Growing Presence in Skokie
According to the most recent census data, more than 21% of Skokie's residents are of Asian descent. Of those residents listing themselves as foreign-born, 53% came from Asia.
The Coalition of Asian American Communities has been in existence since 2003 and among its goals are to increase participation in the civic and cultural activities of Skokie, to increase the number of Asian registered voters and encourage them to vote, and to prepare young people for leadeship positions. Jerry Clariot, a Filipino and Park Board member, said its mission is to see complete integration for Asian-Americans in Skokie. "We want to see a village that is open and embraces all people."
