Tribute to Hal Foster, Founder of Super Hero and Adventure Comics Industry
A special exhibit, Hal Foster: Father of the Super Hero and Adventure Comics, will be on display at Skokie Public Library this summer. From June 1 through July 20, viewers of all ages will see the genius of artist Hal Foster, who started the whole tidal wave of adventure comics by drawing the first Tarzan strips during the 1930s. Foster then went on to create Prince Valiant, an adventure comic familiar to many throughout the world that is virtually unknown in the Chicago area because local papers do not carry that strip. The exhibit traces Foster's life and art, providing examples of his art from throughout his career and showing enlargements of a number of Prince Valiant and other illustrations, and details how the trillion-dollar adventure and super hero industry got its start, in Chicago.
Skokie resident and passionate Hal Foster devotee Sid Weiskirch created the exhibit with the assistance of Library staff. Mr. Weiskirch will share his considerable expertise about Hal Foster and his work in two free talks at the Library, on Wednesday, June 6 at 1:30pm and on Monday, June 25 at 7:30pm. The exhibit is available for viewing during all Library hours.
