Since its inception in 1950, the highest elected member of the executive, the august office of the President of the Republic of India, had been occupied by fourteen distinguished sons of the soil. Their scholarship, their sacrifice in the freedom struggle, social standing and personal stature made all Indians at home and abroad proud. They truly represented the ancient heritage of India. It may be recalled that, Russian dictator Stalin requested a personal meeting with the then Indian Ambassador to Moscow, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. It was a rare occasion. Although the Constitution allows a second term, only Dr. Rajendra Prasad served two terms. The unanimous election for the chair of the President is most desirable.
