YOU CAN FIGHT CITY HALL

Congratulations to the “Caucus Team” on their clean sweep victory, winning all the offices on the Skokie village board. They won fair and square. The people spoke…or did they?

Many people could have voted, but didn’t. One precinct only had 7 voters; another 67. These precincts each had over 500 registered voters. Even Devonshire, an area where residents vote “come H or high water” had a paltry 20-25% voter turnout. A very few Skokians decided Skokie’s fate for the next 4 years.

Legislative session update from Senator Biss

I hope you're well! The 2013 legislative session is entering its final two weeks and I wanted to give you a quick update regarding progress on some of the major issues before the General Assembly. First, though, let me remind you that my office is collecting food for local food pantries during the month of May. Summer is a particularly important time to restock the shelves, as students who receive free or reduced lunch are in need of extra support while out of school. You can drop off non-perishables at 3706 Dempster in Skokie or call us with any questions: 847-568-1250.

Skokie/Lincolnwood Bike Path

After many years, a dream is coming true. A federal grant under a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program will help to enable the bike/walking path to extend past Emily Oaks Nature Center all the way to the Lincolnwood portion of the trail. The trail will have recreational use, but also provide transportation benefits by enabling many residents to access the Skokie Swift via the path. A consultant is working on the design now, with completion hoped for in May of 2014. Keep an eye out for the dedication ceremony information and bike over.

Jesse White Tumbling Team

We have all enjoyed seeing them perform during the 4th of July Parade, now they have gone international. Secretary White joined the tumbling team during a 6-day tour of Israel. The teamed performed twice in Jerusalem, and on base for Israeli soldiers. The trip provided the tumblers with an opportunity to gain insight into the lives of their Israeli peers who were fulfilling their public service duties. The trip was supported by Am Shalom Temple in Glencoe and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.

Poignant Prose from an Amateur Poet

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die . . .

A Favorite Yearly Respite from Bad News

The Greeks participated in a band with the Turks and Armenians. The Pakistanis, Indians, and Bangladeshis helped each other out. The Czechs and Slovaks could be seen cooperating…You probably want whatever I was on while seeing all that, but honestly, I was cold sober. All that and more could be seen at the 23rd annual Skokie Festival of Cultures. Read more at http://recipesforabetterworld.blogspot.com/AFavoriteRespitefromBadNews
